Chapter 12

-1-

Adam’s mind was racing! What excuse would he use for being here, when he was discovered? This was something he had tried to prepare for, but it wasn’t the same when you felt secure, and you had convinced yourself that this time would never come anyway. Now, when time was at a premium, his mind struck a blank. Each time he searched the recesses of his mind for a convincing answer to use if he should be accosted, he came up empty. As Jo-Jo tugged on the leash, barking and growling nervously, Adam knew that the jig was up, and that he was about to come face to face with Max! The only thing he could think of to do was to run as fast as he could, and hope that Jo-Jo wasn’t going to tear him limb from limb when he caught him.

This morning had been relatively uneventful, with very little sign of anything happening. From the purposeful walk and grumpy expressions on their faces whenever the Walters were spotted trotting back and forth to the boathouse or the outhouse, it seemed pretty obvious that Max and Mary were definitely in control pretty well all of the morning. But now, shortly after lunch, Adam heard a quarrel going on inside. He couldn’t make out much of it, but he could tell that Max was angry. He was also surprised that Mary didn’t back off. The angrier Max became the more adamant she became! Suddenly, about two minutes ago, both of them had come barging outside, Max heading straight for Jo-Jo and snapping on his leash while Mary planted herself squarely on the doorstep with her hands placed firmly on her hips. When Max turned to stare at her defiantly, Mary seemed to soften a little and hollered at Max, “Okay, you’re right. Even I can smell it now!”

Adam heard Max growl something like, “I told you so. I’ll check it out!” and then he immediately set off with Jo-Jo, heading straight for the rocky ridge where Adam was once again hidden deep in the branches of the big old tree. But as Max and Jo-Jo quickly closed the gap that separated them, Jo-Jo became more and more agitated and began to strain in the general direction of Adam’s tree, yapping constantly. It was then that Adam realized that he wasn’t well enough hidden to escape notice if Max should plant his feet firmly beneath the tree and look up. He was a sitting duck!

It was lucky for Adam that Max was in such a ferocious mood this particular morning, because he wasn’t about to put up with any nonsense from Jo-Jo and he let him know it right off the bat. “Shut up you damn fool of a dog,” he snarled while they were still about three feet below the top of the ledge. “We don’t have time for that nonsense today. Come on, git,” he yelled again, tugging on Jo-Jo’s leash hard enough to break his neck. As Jo-Jo whined softly and fell into step beside Max, Adam slowly exhaled.
